Scout for Food – November 5th and 12th

Scout for Food

November 5th and 12th

Scouting for Food is an annual food collection orchestrated by the Scouts from the National Capital Area Council.

Local Scouts distribute plastic bags to homes across the region and return to pick up the bags, now filled with food, one week later. Collected food is turned over to local foodbanks for distribution to needy families in the area. This is the single largest community service project that the Scouts participate in all year.

Our yearly Scouting for Food Drive starts Saturday November 5th with distribution of bags and adults and Scouts are needed for this important Troop 1128 activity that helps the needy. We need to have at least 23 parents to drive and all Scouts to place the bags (with flyers inside) at the front of houses. A map will be provided to each driver for the area assigned to them for bag distribution.

Junior Leadership Training (Fall 2016)

Junior Leadership Training (JLT)

October 29, 2016: 9 AM – 3 PM

The PLC will conduct JLT training on Saturday, October 29th from 9 AM to 3 PM. Lunch will be served.

Junior Leadership Training is a Scout’s first exposure to leading in the Patrol setting. Youth protection, issue management, and working as a team are the focus. The program is executed through scenarios delivered in videos and practical exercises.

The training is recommended for Scouts after reaching 2nd Class. All Patrol positions of responsibility require JLT attendance at least once in a Scout’s career. This training is also required for the Basic level of the Troop Achievement Award.

JLT is offered twice each program year. So, if you cannot make the entire training due to a schedule conflict, please sign-up the next time when you can make the whole class.

October Backpacking Trip to Dolly Sods Wilderness

Dolly Sods Fall Color

Dolly Sods Backpacking Trip
Columbus Day Weekend – October 8-10, 2016

This year for the first time we are going to Dolly Sods in the Fall!  There are many benefits to doing it this time of year:

  • There will be fewer people so we can camp in areas that are normally too crowded
  • The fall colors are great
  • There are increased opportunities for wildlife viewing

DETAILS: Troop 1128 is going on a 3-day backpacking trip to Dolly Sods Wilderness near Petersburg, WV, on October 8-10, 2016 (Columbus Day Weekend).
The trip is open to Scouts with experience on other Troop backpacking trips. It is not suitable for Scouts who have never been backpacking, or for new Scouts.
This is a true backpacking experience. We will be backpacking a total of 15 miles over three days, and carrying all equipment, tents, stoves, food, and water.
Proper personal equipment is essential, including pack, boots, sleeping bag, rain gear and clothing.
The recommended equipment checklist is available on the Troop website. There will be a pack inspection prior to the trip.
Average October temperatures in the mountains are 65°F day and 40°F night. Rain is always a possibility.
Layers of clothing, a good rain jacket and rain pants (no ponchos) and a sleeping bag rated down to 25°F are required for safety and comfort.
