2017 National Jamboree

Troop 1128 scouts have the opportunity to participate in the 2017 BSA National Jamboree from July 19-28, 2017. The National Jamboree is an event that only happens every four years and typically just once during each boy’s years as a scout. The National Jamboree will be held at The Summit BSA High Adventure Base near Mt. Hope, West Virginia, where it also was held during July 2013. More than 40,000 scout participants from every state in the country will attend, making it sort of an Olympics of scouting. The Summit will also be the site of the next World Jamboree during the summer of 2019; the most recent World Jamboree was held in Japan in 2015.

The National Jamboree is not a specific troop event since participation from our area is handled by our National Capital Area Council. Our National Capital Area Council has over 20,000 scouts across 23 districts including our Chain Bridge District. Our Chain Bridge District includes Troop 1128 and 77 other scout units and over 2,500 scouts. The Council will fill 12 temporary boy scout troops just for this Jamboree from the greater DC area, each troop with 36 scouts and 4 adult leaders. Troop 1128 ASM Dave Hoffman will serve as an adult leader for one of these troops as he did in 2013, and your scout can be in that specific troop as desired. So far, the Council has filled 360 scout spaces of the 432 spaces available.

There are just two registration requirements (please ignore any added late fees on the application as the council has waived these added fees at our request). If anyone has any questions about the Jamboree, recommend looking through the 2017 Jamboree website including the list of frequently asked questions and/or contacting ASM Dave Hoffman at 703-319-1066 or davehoffman1981@yahoo.com.

Below is a link to a video overview of the Jamboree.

First Meeting

Hello scouts, scouters and parents,

Hopefully everyone has had a great summer and you are ready to get back into our scouting program. I know the Troop emails have provided some updates over the past few week but here are a few items for all of you:

  • Tomorrow, Tuesday 9/6, will be our first troop meeting of the 2016-2017 calendar.
  • We have a critical need for volunteers for the Troop Fair which is scheduled for 9/24. This event is occurring earlier than normal so we need to start our planning quickly. We need 4-5 parents volunteers to make this event successful. Please let me know if you can volunteer. Also, I will like to have an initial planning session tomorrow so please come to the meeting if you can.
  • We also have need for other volunteers in other areas but we will cover that topic at the Troop Committee meeting on 9/20.

I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow at the Troop meeting.

Regards,
Gus Vazquez
Troop 1128 Committee Chair
