2019 Paddles 301: Northern Tier

Dear Scouts and Parents,

Troop 1128 will be traveling to northern Minnesota this summer to participate in the program at the Northern Tier High Adventure Base. Northern Tier is the Boy Scouts of America’s gateway to adventure in the Great Northwoods. We will start our adventure from the flagship base of Northern Tier, the Charles L. Sommers Canoe Base which has hosted Boy Scout canoe expeditions on the shores of Moose Lake since 1941. It is located twenty miles outside of the town of Ely, MN. Our Scouts will be among the over 4,000 Scouts outfitted each year on wilderness canoe trips in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in Minnesota. Although trips also depart from this base for trips in Ontario, Canada, our trip will be exclusively in the United States. Trips out of the Sommers base are limited to 8 total participants plus an Interpreter. Thus we will have two crews of 8 – two adults and 6 Scouts per crew in addition to our interpreters.

The trip will take place 21 – 29 July, 2019. We will leave Dulles Airport for Minneapolis on Sunday, July 21. Upon arriving in Minnesota, we will drive 250 miles north to spend the night near Ely. The next day we will check in at our Northern Tier base camp to start our adventure. Scouts will travel by canoe, paddling, portaging, exploring, and camping in the available millions of acres of pristine lakes, meandering rivers, dense forests and wetlands of northern Minnesota. The trip includes one night at base camp and 6 nights in the wilderness of the Boundary Waters area. Return home begins the morning of Monday, July 29 with the drive south to Minneapolis and flight to Dulles later that day.

If your Scout is interested in this unique high adventure opportunity, please contact Assistant Scoutmaster @@@@@, or during Troop meetings by December 18, 2018. The purpose of this initial contact is to gauge interest. Expect a deposit request of $500 before the school winter break with follow-up payments on 1 February and 1 April for the remaining balance. The initial cost estimate is $1400 per individual for the trip. This includes flight, ground transportation, first night accommodations in Ely, travel meal estimate, specific gear purchases, and all-inclusive outfitting at Northern Tier. Financial aid is available for Scouts for whom this fee would present a hardship.

All participants must be age 14 by the time they arrive at Northern Tier OR have graduated from the 8th grade and be age 13 by the time they arrive. In addition, Scouts must have completed the basic, leadership and service levels of the Troop Achievement Award and have Scoutmaster approval to participate in this trip. Commitment to Northern Tier training prior to departure and continued active participation in Troop activities will be required. Expect more details in the next month.
